Biography
Aston’s work delves into the liminal space between life and death, as well as the interplay of past, present, and future. Her practice explores the existential experience of inhabiting a body and the act of surrendering to the world around us. She embraces the inherent beauty of life in all its forms, emphasizing how our internal self-perception reflects and shapes our external experiences.
Emotionally and psychologically charged, her work examines the complex relationships we cultivate with ourselves and others, as well as the ways in which our bodies interact or simply exist within the present moment. By inviting us to transcend the ego, Aston encourages a deeper understanding of the boundless nature of space and time, fostering an acceptance of our natural state of being.
The artwork reflects a deep engagement with Spiritualism, characterised by a vibrant, dreamlike colour palette that evokes the sensation of entering an otherworldly or fantastical realm. The use of radiant, ethereal hues lends the ghostly, glowing figures a dissolving quality, as though they are fading into the abyss, leaving behind only fleeting impressions. This deliberate interplay of light and form captures the transient nature of life, emphasizing the impermanence of human existence while poignantly exploring the temporality of states and emotions.
Aston's work interrogates questions of identity, drawing from found imagery of individuals at rest or in sleep, as well as her own lived experiences, relationships, personal spiritual journey and relationship to self. Through this process, she transforms these anonymous figures into intimate presences, shifting them from strangers to companions. Her technique involves staining the surface of linen or cotton duck with translucent layers of oil paint, allowing her figures to gradually emerge from the hazy picture plane. A passage to another world, or a slippage in time. Aston's process begins with the application of pouring mediums mixed with minimal pigments to create a fluid, watery underpainting that serves as the foundation for her work, she then alternates between revealing and concealing bodies through erasure and painted marks. The resulting figures appear to dissolve within their ethereal environments, offering viewers a contemplative space to reflect on their own existence.
"I perceive the world as a manifestation of my imagination, where I am the architect of my own reality. To me, the universe is an inherently magical space, with time as a mere construct and multiple timelines interweaving and unfolding simultaneously. It is as though energy is momentarily captured within the frame, existing in one instance and vanishing in the next."
